Toys for Large Cats: Sturdy Wands, Kickers, Wheels and Puzzles
Toys that hold up to a 15 to 20 pound cat: sturdy wands, big kickers, wide tunnels, puzzle feeders and exercise wheels, plus string and small-part safety.

The best toys for a large cat let it stalk, chase, pounce and kick without breaking: wand toys with strong rods and spare lures, kicker toys long enough to hug, wide tunnels and puzzle feeders. Play is a core need, not an extra. Veterinary guidelines link a lack of play to obesity, and strings belong in your hand.
A 20-pound cat plays hard. Thin wand rods snap, small mice vanish under furniture, and tunnels sized for small cats become a tight squeeze. The difference is mostly size and build quality; the rules for safe, useful play are the same for every cat.
Why play matters more for a big cat
The 2013 AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines list play and predatory behavior as one of five pillars of a cat’s environment and say that failing to provide it “can result in obesity or boredom and frustration.” The 2021 AAHA weight management guidelines list “feather toys, cat trees, exercise wheels, or similar devices” as ways to increase exercise in cats. For large breeds, which carry more weight on their joints, that matters; see the care section.
International Cat Care says “short, frequent play sessions most closely resemble a cat’s natural predatory pattern.” No source we found sets a session length, so watch your cat: stop while it is still interested.
What holds up to a big cat
| Toy type | What to look for for a large cat |
|---|---|
| Wand toys | A strong rod, a cord or wire rather than thin string, and replaceable lures |
| Kicker toys | Long enough for the cat to hug and bunny-kick, with stitched seams |
| Tunnels | A wide opening and enough length for a big cat to run through |
| Puzzle feeders | Openings sized for big paws; the guidelines suggest them for small, frequent meals |
| Balls and mice | Too large to swallow, with no small parts that can come loose |
The FelineVMA and International Cat Care environmental needs guide says cats “need to be able to capture the ‘prey’, at least intermittently, to prevent frustration.” With a wand toy, that means letting the lure land and be caught, not only waving it out of reach. Rotate toys so they stay interesting; the guide suggests the same.

Exercise wheels for large cats
Wheels give an active cat a way to run indoors, but size and stated limits matter. One Fast Cat, for example, states that its wheel measures 48 inches across, with an 11-inch-wide running track, and holds cats up to 25 pounds. Its FAQ suggests two to three weeks of training, 5 to 10 minutes a day, for a cat new to a wheel. These are maker claims; check the diameter and weight limit of any wheel against your cat before buying, and expect some cats never to use one.

A wheel takes floor space: the One Fast Cat wheel’s stated assembled size is 48 by 13 by 50 inches. A wide tunnel or a tall cat tree is a smaller step if you are not sure your cat will take to a wheel. See cat trees for large cats.

Safety: string, small parts and storage
- String, yarn, ribbon and tinsel. International Cat Care lists wool, yarn, string and tinsel among items that cause linear foreign bodies, which can bunch up the intestines and usually need surgery.
- Strand-like parts. Cornell advises avoiding toys “with small pieces or linear strand-like parts such as feathers and string that may separate.”
- Put wand toys away. Humane World for Animals advises storing toys with strings out of reach after play.
If you think your cat has swallowed string or thread, call your vet.
Toys as gifts
Toys are the easiest gift for a big-cat household because they need no sizing beyond “big.” See gifts for big cat lovers for more ideas, and the supplies hub for the gear that does need measuring.
Frequently asked questions
What toys are best for large cats?
Toys that let a big cat stalk, chase, pounce and kick without breaking: wand toys with strong rods and replaceable lures, kicker toys long enough to hug, wide tunnels and puzzle feeders. Choose sizes made for big cats and check them for loose parts.
Are cat exercise wheels safe for large cats?
Only within the maker's stated limits. For example, One Fast Cat states its 48-inch wheel holds cats up to 25 pounds and suggests a few weeks of short daily training sessions. Check the stated diameter and weight limit against your cat before buying.
Are string and ribbon toys dangerous for cats?
They can be. International Cat Care lists string, wool and tinsel among items that can cause linear foreign bodies, which usually need surgery, and Cornell advises avoiding strand-like parts that may separate. Use wand toys only while you play, then put them away.
How does play help a large cat's weight?
The AAFP and ISFM environmental needs guidelines say that without predatory-type play, cats can become obese or bored and frustrated, and AAHA lists feather toys, cat trees and exercise wheels as ways to increase a cat's exercise.
